Composer Hannah Ishizaki and conductor Euan Shields discussed Ishizaki’s composition “Odori” which Shields performed with the Hallé Youth Orchestra on December 16th, 2024, in Bridgewater Hall, along with Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Suite and Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.
“Odori” draws inspiration from the Japanese festival Obon which takes place in the summer to honor the spirits of one’s ancestors. Central to this festival is communal dancing, where participants breathe and dance together.
