On November 27, 2025, Euan Shields made his Japan conducting debut with the Osaka Symphony Orchestra in the city where he was born—a concert that felt more like a homecoming than just another engagement. More than twenty of his Japanese family members and friends were in the audience, many hearing him perform live for the first time, which made the occasion especially personal.
The evening opened with Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, featuring celebrated violinist Yasuko Otani. Otani and Shields worked in close partnership, her warm, lyrical playing woven into the orchestra’s sound under his clear, responsive direction. The first movement drew particularly strong applause, and Otani’s encore, Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen, a work she joked she has played thousands of times—brought both smiles and a sense of familiarity to the hall.
The second half was devoted to Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. The Osaka Symphony responded to Shields’ conducting with intense, energetic playing, their rich and powerful sound building steadily through the four movements toward a final section of driving momentum that seemed to bring the hall fully alive. Many listeners later remarked on the atmosphere of the third movement and the impact of the symphony’s climactic ending.
In a review in Ongaku No Tomo magazine, the reviewer wrote that Shields delivered “a lucid interpretation that reached deep into Shostakovich’s world,” praising “the beautifully charged tension of the latter half of the third movement” and “the skillful handling of tempo in the final movement,” which the critic said revealed “a glimpse of his outstanding talent”.
This first appearance is also the beginning of an ongoing relationship with Japanese audiences. Shields returns to Japan on January 9, 2026, to conduct the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra with pianist Kyohei Sorita, marking the next step in a growing connection with orchestras and listeners in Japan.
