The Hallé Youth Orchestra performs Yu Kuwabara for Japan Week in Manchester.
Under the direction of Euan Shields, the Hallé Youth Orchestra presents Yu Kuwabara’s Falling Leaves, Moon Steps as part of Japan Week in Manchester. This contemporary work, inspired by the aesthetics and dramatic tradition of historical Japanese Noh theatre, combines refined orchestral textures with ritualistic, meditative elements that evoke the subtle beauty and symbolic storytelling of Noh.
The performance features soloists Hidejiro Honjoh on shamisen and Shozan Hasegawa on shakuhachi, whose masterful playing brings the distinctive sounds of traditional Japanese instruments into a rich dialogue with the orchestra. Together, the ensemble and soloists explore a fusion of Western orchestral techniques and Japanese theatrical sensibilities, creating a contemplative, evocative soundscape.
